Participants shall be citizens of or lawful permanent residents of the United States and a resident of Iowa. All contestants must be students enrolled in the fifth grade in a public, parochial, military, private or state accredited home-school. Local and district contest awards, if any, will be the responsibility of the individual post and district. Each district finalist must be completed in time to be forwarded to The American Legion Department of Iowa Headquarters. The Department finalists will be recognized in the same manner as other youth champions and will be invited to read their essay at the Department Convention. Local contests will be conducted and judged by the local sponsoring Legion Post, and the winning essay, along with certification form completed, will be forwarded as follows:.

For competition prior to the department finals, the contest rules and regulations are not mandatory; they are offered as guidelines. However, all department finals contests shall conform with national contest procedures, rules and regulations Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for students in grades , including students with special needs.
